What is Steampunk Fashion You Ask?

This is one of my Steampunk ensembles, this photo was taken last year when I had my business Victoriana Lady introduced in Victorian Homes magazine in the Frederick Stegmaier Mansion B&B article.

What Is Steampunk Fashion, You Ask?

My favorite neo-Victorian style of fashion is called Steampunk. What is Steampunk you ask? It's a back to the future aesthetic. Imagine the styles of the steam locomotive era with a modern imaginative twist! There is a lot of debate about what is and isn't Steampunk fashion. I concur that if it has any Victorian roots then it is considered Steampunk.

Women's fashions include corsets worn on the outside this time, bustle dresses, top hats, gothic influences, jewelry made from broken watches and other mechanical pieces, capes and cropped jackets, lace gloves, ruffled skirts, ruffled tops, granny boots, aviator glasses and more. Gents wear waistcoats, tails, vests, top hats, aviator style jackets and pants, goggles, arm bands, jodphurs, pocket watches, and more. Here are a few great sites where you can find Steampunk fashions.

I am presently writing a book about Steampunk fashions and accessories with Schiffer Publishing Ltd. I have been dressing in this style since my college days many years ago before it had a name.

Victorian Homes In My Travels

There's something so quaint about a Victorian home. Queen Anne style is my personal favorite. As a child I loved doll houses, what little girl didn't? They were always beautiful Queen Anne styles with turrets, wrap around porches and gingerbread trim everywhere. I guess the little girl in me never grew up, I still admire Victorian homes, the architecture is like no other. Along my travels I often snap photos of houses along the way. I hope you enjoy this little tour of some of my favorites.

Dressing A Victorian Lady- Copyright Victoriana Lady Lisa 2011

Dressing A Victorian Lady

A Victorian Lady would wear it all,
She'd never forget a glove or a parasol.

From the feet up she would dress,
Always the goal to look her best.

Stocking and shoes, chemise and drawers,
corset and hoops, but wait-there's more!

Corset cover, petticoats and don't forget the bustle,
With so many layers to wear, she must certainly hustle!

Her ensembles will change for every affair,
And she must not dally, one must be there!

Her dress, her hat, and perhaps a fan,
All for the sake, to impress a man.

To be the utmost beauty is her master plan
In hopes for marriage, he shall ask for her hand.

The Garden Gate Tea Room In Florida

My favorite stop when visiting my family in Florida is The Garden Gate Tea Room in Mt. Dora Florida. The food is superb and the Shabby Chic decor is pure delight! See for yourself.

Art Nouveau Gibson Girl Change Purse circa 1904

This is a favorite piece in my traveling museum collection.
I adore anything in the Art Nouveau design style.
It's a change purse with a Gibson Girl relief design.

Victorian Scrapbook Pages

One of my favorite interests is collecting Ephemera, especially Scapbooks, one of the past times enjoyed by Victorian ladies. Here are a few samples. For more information visit the Ephemera Society of America.

Me And My Shadow

I was presenting a Victorian Fashions event at the lovely Victorian Hillside Farms Cottage one afternoon PA. After my program I went to the front of the cottage to take a few photos. I couldn't resist this one when I realized it was my own Victorian shadow. When I present programs for young grade school children they often tell me that I look like Mary Poppins. :)
